U.S. Approves $5 Billion Emergency Arms Sale to Qatar
The U.S. Department of State has approved nearly $5 billion in military sales to Qatar under an emergency determination, bypassing the standard congressional review process amid heightened regional security concerns.
The package includes 10,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and Patriot air and missile defense support services, reinforcing Qatarâs defense capabilities. Officials highlighted the urgency of the approval, citing the need to address ongoing threats and ensure readiness across the Gulf region.
The APKWS system converts unguided rockets into precisionâguided munitions, enhancing operational effectiveness. Qatarâs procurement forms part of a broader $8.6 billion defense deal involving key Middle East allies.
In parallel, the United Arab Emirates has been cleared to purchase APKWS valued at $148 million, underscoring Washingtonâs commitment to strengthening defense partnerships across the region.
Authorities emphasized that the emergency determination reflects the strategic importance of Gulf allies in maintaining regional stability and advancing collective security.
